Practice Overview
Mr. Harnish’s practice focuses extensively on fundamental business transactions, including mergers, stock exchanges, combinations, divisions, consolidations, conversions, and dissolutions involving corporations (both for-profit and nonprofit), partnerships, limited liability companies, and other entity structures across the United States. He has successfully guided numerous religious, scientific, educational, and other charitable organizations through the complex process of formation and the attainment of tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. In addition, he provides ongoing counsel to ensure these organizations remain compliant with applicable tax-exempt laws and regulations.
Professional Involvement
Mr. Harnish is an active member of the Allegheny County Bar Association and served on the Title 15/Business Associations Committee of the Pennsylvania Bar Association. He has lectured on corporate and business law topics for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute and other professional associations. From 2008 to 2024, he served on the Board of the Parkinson Foundation of Western Pennsylvania, as both a member and President. He has also been deeply engaged in civic and professional organizations, having served on the Board of Directors of Pittsburgh Young Professionals from 1991 to 1994, including as President in 1993.
Education
Mr. Harnish earned his B.A. from Dickinson College in 1983, completing his junior year at the London School of Economics in London, England. In 1986, he received both his J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and his M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh Katz Graduate School of Business, where he was inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma honorary society.
